Bear Lose His Tail by Esther Baran Size: 22Lx18W About the artist: My interest in art stemmed from early childhood readings. Books are one of my primary sources for images, from early fairy stories to folk tales from a variety of cultures. While Brothers Grimm and Hans Christian Andersen were my original bed-time stories, I later discovered the tales of collectors like Afanasyev and Norwegians Jorgen Moe and Peter Asbjornsen. Many other stories have been passed down and changed from culture to culture. My favorite is the Icelandic story of a young girl whose adventures are much like those of Cinderella, but in this version she rejects the prince as being too superficial, having only noticed her in her finery and gold slippers. In most of the cultures I have explored, animals play central roles in the stories. Some cultures have animals representing deities, and in some they are comical characters whose behavior mimics humans. Some of the Native American tales use ravens, coyotes, or turtles to explain the origins of the world. Some African cultures have the spider, Ananzi, outwitting Tortoise, or the reverse. The possibilities for imagery are endless. Researching each country's history and unique characteristics is part of my enjoyment in doing the piece. I like to incorporate the fabric patterns and ornamentation from each ethnic group in borders around the images. I have used the same techniques in illustrating children's books. I focused on color etchings for 40 years, but added watercolors and oils as a more direct form of expression. In all media, in addition to folktales, I do landscapes and still lifes of fruits and vegetables

Cold Snap By Ellen Gust Size: 25x19 Contemporary artist Ellen Gust, works in pastel and acrylic. Her work focuses on the interaction of color & light, and how shadow affects form between structures, people or landscape catching the right mood that grabs the attention of the viewer to look deeper. She has exhibited her work in numerous galleries, juried art exhibits, and is currently represented at Gallery24 in Los Gatos, California and QD Gallery, Palo Alto, California In 2022, her work was awarded Best In Show by master pastellist, Michael Freeman of New Zealand, who said The body of work talks about the artist... This work (A Sense of Futility) grabbed my attention immediately and kept it. He said of the work that it was, masterful simplicity , bliss is more, minimum mark making, with a unique style... All of this artist's submissions were amazing. In 2020, here's what art judge Christine Ivers, a master pastelist with the Pastel Society of America, had to say about one of Ellen's award winning work, Red Suit. This impressionistic piece caught my eye immediately. With a flare of daring and the rim light that surrounds the figure I knew this was a wonderful painting. This artist was able to create a three dimensional form with so few strokes I was amazed. With only indications of sea, sand and sky through the use of pure color she drew me into this scene and story. With mark making at its best and composition to interest any viewer...

Slippers - By Local Artist Linda Richardi 20x20 Linda Richardi is a Photographic-Artist and painter working in California. Linda has been an Artist for many years. Her work emcompasses hand colored photorography, mono printing, lithography, digital photographs, and most currently, Acrylic and mixed media paintings. Linda Richardi's work has been shown in multiple jurried exhibitions including UC Irvine and Exposure gallery in San Francisco. Linda's hand colored photo work was also the subject of a curated exhibition at San Francisco State. Linda Richardi's current work was featured in the 2016 show WATER AND LIGHT at the Palm Desert Civic Gallery and the 2017 La Quinta Museum exhibition Tell me a Story Women in Art as well as THE CREATORS at the CREATE center for the Arts in Palm Desert, CA Linda Kline-Richardi attended California college of Arts and Crafts and Diablo Valley College where she was a teaching assistant in the Photo department.
