Zoomorph Coconut Grate St
$1,600.00

In South East Asia, grating stools are carved in one piece, usually as realistic or stylised animals with the blade coming out of the mouth – all sorts of shapes are popular, from rabbits to horses and even rats. The fresh green coconut is the primary source of fat in the daily diet of almost all tribal peoples living in the coastal tropics, from Zanzibar to Micronesia and Kerala to the Philippines. It is prepared by grating the flesh into shreds, usually while seated on a stool fitted with a serrated blade so that the worker’s weight stabilises it. The grated shreds are caught in a bowl below the blade and squeezed by hand to extract the white coconut milk. Learn More

Scottish Orkney Chair
$2,600.00

Very fine and unusual 19th century Scottish woven rush and wood chair from the Orkney Islands, this example is remarkable for its age, condition and the uncommon hooded back reminiscent of a Georgian porter's chair and probably conceived for the same reason, to shelter the sitter from cold drafts.
